Palm reading (手相, Shou Xiang) is the traditional practice of understanding character and fortune from hand features. It examines hand shape, palm size, finger length and shape, and the quality of lines to infer personality and life patterns.
Traditional palm reading identifies four basic hand shapes: Earth hand (square, practical), Water hand (long, adaptive), Fire hand (rectangular, enthusiastic), and Air hand (soft, intellectual). Each shape suggests dominant personality tendencies and life approaches.
Palm texture, flexibility, and temperature indicate constitutional quality and energy level. A firm, warm palm suggests vitality; a soft, cool palm may indicate different constitutional patterns. These observations provide context for line interpretation.
The major lines (life, heart, head) provide primary interpretive structure. Minor lines add additional nuance. Line length, depth, clarity, and breaks all affect interpretation, but no single line detail determines the overall reading.
Palm reading provides personality tendencies and life pattern observations. It should support self-reflection rather than create fixed expectations. Understanding palm tendencies can help individuals recognize their natural strengths and areas for development.
